Chef Shane Sauvage has been in the restaurant business for 39 years, working his way through the ranks from an early age. In 1995, he fulfilled the dream of opening his own restaurant with his partner Janet, and dubbed it La Pentola. With La Pentola as a platform, Shane’s career soared and their partnership flourished to new heights raking up over 35 (and counting) local and international accolades and awards including:

Gourmet Festival Top Restaurant – three years consecutively
Eat Out Top 100
Chaines des Rottiseurs Blazon
American Platinum Fine Dining Award – 16 years consecutively including the coveted 10 year award
Numerous Diners Club Winelist Diamond & Platinum awards

Shane’s passion to teach and share his recipes led him to publish three books: The Edge of Fusion (2009), Infusion (2011) and Cape Fusion (2015). The latter two scooped up three international awards at the Gourmand Awards in Spain for Best Chefs Book (2011), Most Innovative Chef’s Book (2015) and Best South African Recipe book (2015).

All the recipes are based on his style of food fusion in which Shane has affectionately been dubbed by the critics as ”The father of South African Fusion Cuisine”. Shane and Janet’s business partnership blossomed into marriage and three children – Falcon, Willow & Marina, and twelve years ago they made their life dream come true together, opening La Pentola in Hermanus where they reside and enjoy their family business with a panoramic sea view.

Shane loves his office yet still consults on request. Through occasional television appearances, podcasts and annual participation in the Hermanus Fynarts Festival since its inception, Shane continues to share his passion and enthusiasm for food, wine and a dynamic ever-evolving industry in which he continues to train chefs and navigate the challenges of being an independent Chef Patron.
